In 1992 I decided to enter a poetry contest hosted by The International Society of Poets. For the next few years I entered several of my poems annually, several of them won Merit and Achievement Awards, two were recorded on tape, and seven were published in Anthologies. One was even published as a greeting card by Blue Mountain Arts. I was thrilled by each accomplishment. I had a Poet’s Corner in a local publication, and was asked on several occasions to write something “special” for friends on birthdays or holidays. I have even written four eulogies.
I love writing and would spend my life doing it if I didn’t have to actually work for a living. I have written a novel which is in the process of being edited for publication, but due to many set backs I have yet accomplished that goal. Maybe one day that goal will be realized.
The poetry in this section was written over the period of a lifetime, beginning in high school until the present. Some is fun and fanciful, even a bit ridiculous. A few were written for my daughter and some in memory of my parents. Some were written about lost loves and some were written about my true love. Some were written because of a book I had read or a movie I had seen. But all of them are original and straight from my heart.
Life is full of ups and downs, highs and lows, good days and bad days - and each of us has our own particular way of dealing Life. Some people hold their emotions in - afraid to let others know how they really feel. Others have no problem at all expressing their emotions and opinions openly. We see it all the time in the forms of demonstrations, graffiti, benefit concerts by musicians, and - yes - creative writing. I have always expressed my emotions by laughing, crying, yelling, or by putting them in writing. Once those feelings are out in the open, I can begin to deal with them. Sometimes I keep my writings and record them in a journal. Sometimes I tear them up and throw them in the trash. Sometimes they make sense and sometimes they don't, but it always helps me to get them out of my system.
What you will be reading here is only a portion of a collection that began in the 1960's. To publish it is to bear my soul, but that, after all, is what poetry is all about, isn't it?
